Faith, Feelings & the Truth About Depression #WellnessCheck

October is National Depression and Mental Health Screening Month, and it’s the perfect time to talk about something we often avoid in the church—mental health.

For too long, many believers have been told that “true Christians don’t get depressed.” That belief is not only unbiblical—it’s harmful. Depression isn’t a sign of weak faith. It’s a sign that you’re human.

The Bible is full of faithful people who faced emotional pain. David wrote songs of sorrow. Elijah asked God to take his life. Job mourned and questioned God in his suffering. And yet, God still loved them deeply, met them where they were, and carried them through.

💛 Depression Is Not a Lack of Faith

Being a Christian doesn’t make you immune to struggle. It means you have a Savior who walks with you through it. Faith and feelings can coexist—you can love God and still feel low.

💬 Let’s End the Silence

It’s time to remove the stigma in our churches and communities. Pastors, leaders, and believers must create safe spaces for people to share their pain without shame. Prayer, worship, and scripture are powerful tools for healing, but so are therapy, rest, and support. God uses all of them.

 What You Can Do

  • Check in with someone you haven’t heard from lately.
  • Take a screening if you’ve been feeling down—it’s okay to ask for help.
  • Pray for those who are struggling, not with judgment but with compassion.
  • Remember: Jesus came to heal the brokenhearted—and that includes the emotionally broken too.

If you or someone you love is in emotional distress, please reach out for help. You can start with your doctor, your pastor, or organizations like the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) at nami.org, or the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by dialing 988 in the U.S.

Let’s normalize caring for our mental health the same way we care for our physical and spiritual health. Because God cares about all of you—mind, body, and spirit.
