Cookout Safety Tips for Our Families
As we head into the Fourth of July, many of us will gather with family and friends for cookouts, great food, and good times. But safety needs to be on the menu, too—because in our communities, we know the cookout is more than a meal; it’s a tradition.
Here’s what we shared on-air today for Be Well Wednesday:
🔹 Keep raw and cooked foods separate. Don’t reuse plates or tongs you used for raw meat. Cross-contamination can cause foodborne illness—keep those ribs, chicken, and burgers safe!
🔹 Use a food thermometer. Make sure meat reaches at least 165°F internally to kill bacteria. Don’t just rely on color—some meats can look done but still be undercooked.
🔹 Practice fire safety with your grill. Set up your grill at least 10 feet away from any structures. Keep kids and pets at least 3 feet from the grill area.
🔹 Dispose of coals safely. After grilling, let coals cool completely before putting them in a metal container. Never use plastic bins, which can melt and start fires.
Let’s make this Fourth of July one to remember for the right reasons. Enjoy your food, fellowship, and family—safely and responsibly.
