Black History Month 2022
Celebrating the many contributions that Black Americans have made throughout history.
Since its beginnings as a weeklong recognition by historian Carter G. Woodson in 1926, Black History Month has grown to include opportunities for education, reflection, and celebration.
Highlighting and celebrating the contributions and achievements of Black Americans is essential in providing an accurate narrative of our nation’s and city’s history. From the incredible bestowal of leadership, honor, courage, vibrancy, culture, and overall progress, a month will never be enough to house the vital role the Black community plays in forging what America can become. The power and fortitude that can be gained from the richness of Black history emboldens us in the present and propels us into a stronger future.
All month long, we’ll share activities, events, and reflections that celebrate Black history, and particularly, the history of Black Philadelphians. Explore our calendar and share with your friends, family, and colleagues.
