Today’s Wellness Check is all about making sure your holiday feast is prepared safely. Here’s everything you need to know about thawing, prepping, cooking, and storing your food this Thanksgiving.

With Thanksgiving only hours away, Be Well Wednesday is all about making sure your holiday feast is prepared safely. Here’s everything you need to know about thawing, prepping, cooking, and storing your food this Thanksgiving.

🦃 1. Safe Thawing Methods

  • The safest way to thaw a frozen turkey is in the refrigerator:
  • Allow 24 hours of thawing time for every 4–5 pounds.
  • Place the turkey on a tray to catch drips and avoid contamination.
  • If you’re short on time, use the cold water method:
  • Keep the turkey in its original wrapper.

Submerge it in cold water, changing the water every 30 minutes.

Never thaw at room temperature — bacteria grows quickly on the surface while the inside is still frozen.

🧼 2. Safe Preparation Practices

  • Food safety starts with clean hands and clean surfaces.
  • Wash hands before and after handling raw turkey.
  • Keep raw poultry separate from produce, cooked food, and utensils.
  • Sanitize countertops, sinks, knives, and cutting boards immediately after contact with raw turkey.

Avoid cross-contamination by using separate cutting boards for meats and vegetables.

🔥 3. Safe Cooking Temperatures

  • Your turkey is fully cooked and safe to eat when it reaches an internal temperature of 165°F. Check the temperature in:
  • The thickest part of the breast
  • The innermost part of the thigh
  • The stuffing (if cooking inside the turkey)
  • Never rely on color alone — always use a meat thermometer.

🥡 4. Storing and Reheating Leftovers

  • Leftovers should be refrigerated within two hours of cooking.
  • Store in shallow containers so the food cools quickly.
  • Keep the refrigerator at 40°F or below.
  • Reheat all leftovers to 165°F before eating.
  • Use leftovers within 3–4 days, or freeze them for longer storage.

💛 Enjoy a Healthy, Safe Thanksgiving

Food safety may not be the most glamorous part of Thanksgiving prep, but it’s one of the most important. By following these simple guidelines, you can keep your family healthy while enjoying every bite of the holiday meal.

From all of us at Gospel Highway Eleven, have a blessed and safe Thanksgiving!
