Tips on Maintaining Peace from a Biblical Perspective #WellnessCheck

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and we’re using our Wellness Check segment to shine a light on an often-taboo topic—mental health in the faith community.

Christians are sometimes taught to stay quiet about mental struggles for fear of being judged—or worse, seen as lacking faith. But here’s the truth: your mental health matters to God. He created you—body, soul, and mind. Just as we care for our physical health, our emotional and mental well-being deserves attention too. Here are two tips that help me maintain peace daily, based on the Word of God:

1. Let God Be God… and Breathe

One of the biggest causes of my stress used to be trying to control everything. I’d carry every burden, fight every battle, and wear myself out in the process. But Psalm 46:10 reminded me:

“Be still and know that I am God.”

I had to learn to step back and trust that God is sovereign. He’s not asking me to be in control—He’s asking me to trust that He is. When I began giving my daily battles to God and literally pausing to breathe, the anxiety started to lift. Friend, sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is stop… and exhale.

2. Think on These Things

We all know how one negative thought can spiral into a full-blown breakdown. That used to be me. But God’s Word gave me a strategy to fight back:

“We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
—2 Corinthians 10:5

“Whatever is true… honest… pure… lovely… think on these things.”
—Philippians 4:8

This became my filter. I cut down my news intake. I unfollowed toxic social media pages. I started each morning not with my phone, but with a scripture. These changes helped me protect my peace and guard my mind. If it wasn’t feeding my spirit, I didn’t feed on it.

A Final Word:
These tips aren’t a replacement for professional help if you’re dealing with more serious mental health issues. But they are a starting point—a daily practice of leaning into God’s Word for stability and peace. Don’t suffer in silence. You matter. Your mental health matters. And most importantly—God cares.
